Tyler received a volcano kit
from Grandma and Grandpa for Christmas and he was very anxious to put it
together and make it erupt. After constructing it he had to wait a torturous 3
days for it to dry before he was finally able to watch the fruits of his labor.
After carefully reading the instructions we added the water as instructed and
waited for something to happen… And waited… And waited… Finally we pulled out
the vinegar and added it to the mix and it spewed “molten lava” out the top and
down the sides. Tyler was impressed, but a few weeks later we had a chance to
really make it interesting with some dry ice. I think it was a much bigger hit
than the vinegar and baking soda mix.
Alana celebrated her 3?th birthday January 18. She
didn’t want to do anything special so we just had a couple of friends over to celebrate
with a small cake at the last minute.
January was pretty cold
and rainy. Up in the higher elevations nearby we actually got quite a bit of snow
so one weekend afternoon we were able to drive about 30 minutes up Figueroa
Mountain and get some snow playtime in. We borrowed a neighbor’s sled and Bill
and Tyler had a grand time sledding down the hill. Tyler fell off a couple of
times which we thought would totally deter him from getting back on, but he was
laughing the entire time. You could hear his giddy laugh all the way down.
Tyler then instigated a snowball fight and he and Daddy made a very impressive
snowman. Tyler had been learning about snow and winter all month at school so
he was very excited about actually getting to experience it. We don’t usually
get snow in our neck of the woods so it was a nice change. He said the only
thing he wished he could do was catch a snowflake on his tongue. Still, he said
he had so much fun he wanted to do it again the following weekend.
Unfortunately, the weather warmed up during the week and the snow had pretty
much melted by then. Maybe next year Tyler.

Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year were on the same day this year. To celebrate both we went up to visit Alana’s parents in Morgan Hill. We decided at the last minute to go bowling. They did have bumpers for Tyler to bowl, but they didn’t have the ramps for the ball to roll down so Tyler basically banged our lane up tossing the ball down. I think he had more fun doing it though. He even managed to do better than some of us adults, but we’re not naming names.
Instead of heading up to San Francisco and the crowds this year for the parade we decided to have a little celebration at our house with a few friends. We had Chinese take out and the kids got to set off a few “firecrackers.” It was very low key, but it was great to just hang out with good friends for an evening.
